Uganda Cow Project
Last summer Toni, MPA’s Director and Founder, had the privilege of meeting with Bishop John Baptist Kaggawa, who initially began the Cow Project in 1993 because of his own experience of poverty as a child. The MPA funds will be used to provide money for microfinancing loans in Uganda for families to purchase a cow.
When families are able to purchase a cow for $800, they are first taught how to care for it. A cow gives around 20 liters of milk a day. The family uses two liters for themselves and sells 18 liters. From the sale of cow milk, the family pays for expenses and puts some money in the bank to pay back the microfinancing loan. The bio-fuel made from the waste products of the cow is an important part of the Cow Project.
The bio-fuel, which is clean and earth friendly, is used for cooking and lights in the house. The remains from the bio-fuel are then used for fertilizer for the banana trees, which are the main food in Uganda. The cow’s calf is passed onto the next family that has been trained. The Cow Project has grown since it started in 1993, and is currently helping 585 families. There are still 2,000 families trained and waiting for a cow to begin their journey out of poverty!
You can still purchase a cow!
If you would like to purchase a cow or give money towards the purchase of a cow, your donations are still welcome. Call the MPA office at 314-776-1319 for more information.
