Cows & Hope

Cow ProjectMariam and Ali Lubega live in the village of Minyinya in the Masaka area of Uganda.  This Muslim family includes nine children and five grandchildren.  The Lubega family has worked their farm for over ten years, but never had enough to eat.  Although they had heard of the Cow Project through Caritas MADDO, and in fact joined in with the project for about 1.5 years, they were not fully focused on the program because they were skeptical that it could make a difference for them.

At the beginning of 2010, their mindset changed, and the family pulled together and put in very intense effort to prepare their farm and a shed for a cow.  Even before receiving a cow, they could see a difference in the productivity of their farm.  The composting, contouring of trenches, raised vegetable beds, and efficient agricultural techniques, have resulted in greater bounty from their land.  Mariam and Ali pointed out one of their vegetable beds, shaped to spell out “CARITAS*M,” and another in the shape of a heart, to signify that Caritas MADDO will always be in their hearts.  The Lubega sons showed us the map of their farm and explained the symbols for pineapples and banana plants.

Together with other villagers of Minyinya, the Lubega family received a cow through the Cow Project at a ceremony on March 31, 2010.
