18 July, 2009, Saturday Phone call to Barb from Toni
The computers are down. Sorry we haven’t e-mailed. We leave for Uganda on Sunday. We are going to meet Heidi, Barb’s cousin, who will be doing the DVD on the Ugandan cow project. Today, Saturday, we met Sr. Janet Crane, SSND, and she invited us to the CPE pastoral care graduation of 6 students, 3 from the Sudan, 1 from Ethiopia, and 2 from Kenya. The Bishop of Southern Sudan was there and spoke, so I learned a lot about Sudan. This afternoon we finished up at Jamii Bora headquarters and spent three wonderful hours with Ingrid Munro sharing stories about MPA and Jamii Bora and the important people in our lives. She is the chairperson for the microfinance summit coming to Nairobi April 7 – 10 of 2010, and she wants as many as possible to come. We talked a great deal about making the Jamii Bora microfinancing program a pilot program for other countries to learn from. On Friday I gave everybody a day off. We went to visit the elephant orphanage and had lunch where the story Out of Africa happened. We also reconnected with good friends from the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood for whom we brought many school supplies which they will use as they help the street children. Friday we went back to Kibera and heard the youth band. Then we took Susan, our guide from Jamii Bora for the past two weeks, out for pizza for her birthday. We got her a cake with candles that once you blow them out they relight. She thought it was magic! We’ve had a very rewarding two weeks, and once again I leave part of my heart here in Kenya as we journey on to Uganda. Thank you for your prayers, your interest, support, and concern. It is greatly appreciated by me, Mary Lou, Vanessa, and especially our brothers and sisters at Jamii Bora and Ingrid Munro. As Mary Lou and I go to Uganda, Vanessa returns back to the United States.
